Demise of the South Side Community Art Center

Take a look at this new collaborative and controversial exhibtion.

Statement:

Greetings Friends,

I have asked each you to participate in this exhibition based on my respect foryour various practices, and of your access and opinions of the South Side Community Art Center and other culturally specific institutions.

As an artist my involvement with the South Side Community Art Center started as an artists in need. Coming to Chicago in 2003, I had no resources or support. The artists of the SSCAC reached out to me and started the foundation for my practice. After 6 years of involvement I have transitioned from artist of the SSCAC to administrator of the SSCAC. Through my involvement, I have had privy to the intricacies of how the organization is managed and leveraged.

The “Demise of the South Side Community Art Center” will consist of a small gathering of artists who have had experiences with the SSCAC and other organizations. I am asking each participant to take an honest yet loving look at these organizations and provide their thoughts and interpretations.

In preparation for the exhibition we shall gather and discuss two questions.
1. What does it mean to destroy? What can be lost and gained from destruction?
2. What is the role of Culturally specific institutions in dismantling and rebuilding
in today's society?

Artwork, performances, and happenings will be presented in response to these questions. Focusing on and within the South Side Community Art Center the hope of this exhibition is to inspire dialog and action centered around the relevance and role of culturally specific institution.

This project is about dismantling and rebuilding
Thanks,
Faheem
